Dynamics 365 vs. Dynamics NAV – what do we need to know?

Microsoft Dynamics 365

Microsoft Dynamics 365, as a new Microsoft product, is a combination of two Dynamics business solutions: ERP (Microsoft Dynamics NAV or AX) and CRM. The functionalities of these solutions have been repackaged and are offered in cloud on the Microsoft Azure platform, with a group of additional functional possibilities (eg. Power BI, IoT etc.).

The trend to use cloud accounting is visible in the West, and also coming to Poland. Dynamics 365 is the answer to the growing market of business applications available in cloud.

Dynamics 365 consists of 2 groups:

  1. Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition – modules:
    1. Dynamics 365 for Operations (functionality of the current Dynamics AX)
    2. Dynamics 365 for Sales (sales functionality of CRM Online)
    3. Dynamics 365 for Marketing (marketing functionality CRM Online)
    4. Dynamics 365 for Customer Service (customer service functionality of CRM online)
    5. Dynamics 365 for Field Service (add-on supporting field work)
    6. Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation (add-on supporting field work CRM Online)
    7. Dynamics 365 for Marketing (result of cooperation between Microsoft and Adobe)
    8. Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition has been optimised for more than 250 users and it will be impossible to implement this solution in an installation with fewer than 20 users.
  2.

  3. Dynamics 365 Business Edition - modules:
    1. Dynamics 365 for Financials (currently part of Dynamics NAVfunctionality; in future, full functionality of Dynamics NAV: Starter Pack
    2. Dynamics 365 for Sales (sales functionality of CRM Online)
    3. Dynamics 365 for Marketing (functionality of CRM Online)
    4. Dynamics 365 Business Edition has been optimised for between 10 and 250 users and it will be impossible to implement this solution in an installation with more than 300 users.
  4.

Microsoft, in order to expand Dynamics 365, also introduces additional functionalities into the system through applications created by its partners, available to clients through the AppSource platform. Basic processes (finances, sales, distribution) can be completed through Dynamics 365 Business Edition, while production processes, such as WMS, through an AppSpource application.

To sum up:
is a cloud-type solution based on Dynamics NAV technology, designed for small companies. Although there are differences between Dynamics 365 for Financials and Dynamics NAV, Microsoft is planning to update Dynamics 365 monthly and has announced that in future all Dynamics NAV (Starter Pack) functions will be available in Dynamics 365 for Financials.

Dynamics 365 for Financials does not compete with Dynamics NAV. It is rather similar to its younger sibling, who is growing fast and has a different place amongst the products on the market of business solutions. Both solutions have been designed for different clients and address different business needs.

We can certainly expect further positive developments in the family of Microsoft Dynamics solutions.
